Something about the word “vintage” just automatically has me seeing googly-heart eyes all over the place! So when I decided to create a cute little Valentine’s Day canvas using some vintage buttons, I knew my heart would be going pitter patter. Major crushing going on!
I started out with a simple white canvas I found at Walmart in the craft section. They come in 2 or 3 packs for about $5 and are nice to have on hand for different art projects.
I decided on painting some 1″ stripes across the canvas, alternating between red and pink.
I measured off the lines with a pencil, then took a small foam brush and painted in the colors.
When I had let it dry for about 30 minutes, I came back and started sorting through my vintage buttons.
Honestly, I couldn’t tell you exactly how many of these I have, since it is a rather large bin full of assorted buttons, leftover from my grandmother’s sewing days. I love sifting through them, finding unique ones and using them in different art projects.
I basically pulled out anything “Valentine-y” that was in a hue of pink, red, purple or sparkly. I was going for that eclectic look. *I should note, any button that did not lay completely flat and had a raised back, I simply used a needle nose pliers to snip off the end.
Once I had my buttons chosen, I made the shape of a heart with them in the center of my painted canvas. I played around with the placement and pattern a few times, until I had it exactly the way I wanted it.
Then I took some Elmer’s Craft Bond all purpose glue and one by one, put a small dot of glue on the back of each button in the heart. This glue is strong and dries clear, so it worked well for this project.
Once the glue had dried on the back of the buttons, I had one super cute Valentine canvas to display on the wall in my kitchen!
This project had me at “vintage” and I’m so in love with the way it turned out! Have a Happy Valentine’s Day!
