I don’t think it’s any big secret here on this blog that it’s my husband and my dream to someday own our own little farmstead. We’ve been on the hunt for the last 3 years to try to find it, but still haven’t come across “the one” quite yet.
Our family is incredibly blessed to own the beautiful home we’re living in now, and recently have felt as though God’s been reminding us to slow down and just enjoy our time here for now.
We’re choosing to trust that God has a plan, and when the timing is right, it will happen. #keepthefaith
While we wait, we figured we’d bring some of that country charm here to our current home, which is why we chose vintage farm inspired decor for our family’s rec room.
I’ve still got a good stash of barn wood that was gifted to me a year ago, and have been working on little projects here and there with it.
Last Christmas, I made a barn wood box for our fireplace mantel.
Then a few months ago, when we started on the rec room, I realized another way we could incorporate these vintage barn boards — by making them into some storage shelves.
This project was very simple. By using some inexpensive metal brackets from the local hardware store, we were able to attach 2 long boards together to create each shelf section.
Then screwing them down into the brackets we created functioning barn wood shelves!
I love the look of these rustic red beams, and they do a good job holding all of our puzzles and interactive toys above this seating area.
For the rest of the decor in this space, we chose a mix of vintage and inspiration directly from the farm itself…no pun intended!
A few years ago, we took a trip to visit my husband’s uncle’s farm in Minnesota. It was a beautiful sunny, summer day, perfect for taking some pictures around the property.
I lucked out and got a few really great shots of the red barn, the windmill and some of the corn fields. Is there anything more American than a field of green corn in the summertime?
These pictures were my inspiration for the wall space above our new sofa. With the help of some inexpensive Ikea frames and my photos blown up on enlarged prints, I was able to give this space a custom “down-on-the-farm” feel.
For Christmas, my hubby gifted me a couple of other cool vintage farm signs he found while doing some “online picking” on Ebay.
He knows the way to my heart is something old and chippy!
I really love the way this space all came together. We focused our efforts on what we wanted the purpose of this area to be for our family, then paired it with a design of what we’re already passionate about, and now it really feels like a place we want to hang out in all the time. #missionaccomplished
